Nicolette Fernandes is first Guyanese to win a World Masters squash title

Local squash queen Nicolette Fernandes created history when she became the first Guyanese to win a World Masters squash title, defeating South African, Slyoli Waters, 3-0 to clinch the Women’s 35-plus division title at the World Masters Squash Championsh­ip in Poland.

Needing to win her final roundrobin encounter to clinch the title, Fernandes defeated the South African in straight sets 11-6, 11-5, 11-5 to become the only Guyanese to win a World Masters squash accolade.

The decorated Fernandes has captured six women’s senior CASA titles. She also won gold at the 2006 CAC Games, 2010 South American Games, and a historic 2022 Pan Am Senior Squash Championsh­ip title, among other silver and bronze medal acquisitio­ns.
