Police officer gets 50 months for dangerous driving death
A 50-month sentence was last Wednesday handed down to Stephan Ramsay, an officer of the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) of the Guyana Police Force, for causing the death of 59-year-old Dulmattie Boodlall by dangerous driving.
The sentence was handed down to Ramsay when he appeared at the Diamond\Grove Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman, following a trial where he was found guilty.
On February 5th of this year, the TSU officer made his first court appearance before the Magistrate where he had pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleges that on January 5th, he caused the death of Boodlall by driving in a manner dangerous to the public.
He had then been released
on $600,000 bail.
Reports into the fatal accident had revealed that Boodlall of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was on her way to work on the morning of January 5th, when she was struck down at Nandy Park,
EBD, as she attempted to cross the public road.
The police had said that at the time of the accident, the East Bank three-lane was active and a police force bus PWW 7172, which was being driven by Ramsay and which was attached to the TSU, was heading north along the western side of the eastern carriageway.
Ramsay had told the police that at about 07:26 am, he was approaching the pedestrian crossing when he suddenly saw Boodlall crossing from west to east on the crossing. He swerved east to avoid a collision but because of the short distance he struck her.
The woman was then rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital by the said driver where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
