Read and discuss the notes. The Elements of a Paragraph- Part 1

-

The main elements of a paragraph are: a) the topic sentence b) order c) unity d) coherence

The Topic Sentence

• The topic sentence is the main or controlling sentence of a paragraph.

• It tells the writer’s main idea about the topic.

• The main idea is the one special thought or feeling a writer has about the topic. It is the idea the writer wants to make sure the readers will not miss.

• Key words are used in a topic sentence to label the topic and the main idea.

• The topic sentence usually comes at the beginning of the paragraph but can appear in the middle or at the end of the paragraph. (The topic sentence at the beginning of a paragraph gives the main idea right away. It signals to the reader what is coming next.)

ON MY OWN

1. Read as many paragraphs as you can.

2. Draw a line under the topic sentence of each paragraph.

3. Circle the key words in the topic sentence which help you to identify the topic.

GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION- TABLES

Tables present facts/information/data with the use of figures. Each table has a title. The title tells us what the table is about.

Examine the table and note the following:

1. There is title.

2. The rows have headings. These give facts in the columns beneath. Columns run up and down.

3. To find the information or data, move across the rows and down the columns.

ON MY OWN

Study the information carefully then answer the questions which follow.
