$447M contract signed for sub-registry building at Suddie

-

A $447 million contract was signed on Friday for the construction of a building at Suddie to house the Deeds and Commercial Registry’s operations in Region Two (PomeroonSupenaam).

The simple contract signing ceremony for the planned threestorey sub-registry building was held on Friday in the boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council. Registrar of the Deeds Registry Azeena Baksh, contractor Ganesh Jaigobin, Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva and officials of Ministry of Legal Affairs were present for the signing.

Earlier in the year, Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall had announced plans for the sub-registry, which is to be constructed in the compound of the Suddie High Court.

The contract was awarded to Jaikam Construction Inc through the National Tender Board.

Regional Chairperson De Silva said that the building will boost the legal system in Region Two as it would help with the decentralisation of the services, including the processing of transports and renewing of business registrations.

“The entity also deals with laws relating to trademarks, patents and designs, geographical indications, copyrights, trade unions, companies, partnership, business names, powers of attorney, bills of sale contracts and other deeds,” De Silva said.

The regional chairperson said that the region would be monitoring the project as she noted the size of the contract and the need for transparency.
