Lorraine Mitchell turns 100
Minister in the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar yesterday represented President Irfaan Ali at the birthday celebration of Lorraine Mitchell, who turned 100 years old.
A release from the Ministry of Public Works said that in the company of loved ones, Aunty Lorraine, as she is fondly called, told Indar stories about significant moments in history as she recalled. Born in then Dutch Guiana, the centenarian said she is lucky to have survived the turbulent World War II period as she was on the last ship to then British Guiana before another vessel was bombed.
She also recounted her visit to the coronation of the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
After singing a melodious rendition of the 1959 Jim Reeves song “He’ll Have to Go”, the centenarian thanked Indar for his visit and asked him to convey her best wishes to the President for honouring her on her birthday.
Mitchell was showered with gifts from President Ali, Indar and the Civil Defence Commission, the release said.
