Grade Six Science

- Hello Boys and Girls,

How has your past week been? Has Daddy spent time any time with you today? It’s time once again for Science!

This week we will look at our environment. We will look at our immediate environment. Let's take a close look at the environment in which we live.

Make a drawing of a house that you might like to build for yourself when you grow up. Use your imagination to make it a nice house. Draw the outside of the house and the surroundings.

Look at the house in the picture below. It is Brian’s imaginary house.

Your house may not be the same as Brian’s.

In your drawing did you show any of the following?

- piles of rubbish lying around outside

- dirty walls or verandas

- flies, mosquitoes, rats, bugs

- dirty water in puddles or leaking from drains

- overgrown grass or bushes where pests or dangerous animals might live or hide - people defecating or urinating outside

I’m sure that your answer to each was “no, of course not!” Everyone would rather live in clean, tidy and attractive surroundings, where they have the basic necessities of life. We call this a healthy environment.

Is your environment clean and healthy?

Compose a checklist. Use it for yourself and for your friends.

Take a walk with a friend around your community. In a notebook list clean as well as unhealthy practices/ habits that you have noticed. (You can recheck the list above.)

What can you do to help everyone in the community to keep their environment clean and healthy?

Find these words in the wordsearch below: environment, clean, tidy, overgrowth, rubbish, healthy, pests, mosquitoes, water, surroundings, dead, practices, dirty, community

Let us look at another type of environment. Let us look at Forests.

What is a forest? Have you ever been in a forest? What stories do you know that involved forests? Did you think of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Hansel and Gretel? Have some more discussions with a friend and see how many more you come up with.

A forest is a large tract or area of land covered with trees and dense (very thick) undergrowth. Can you locate on a map of Guyana the places where forests can be found? Your teacher can help you.

Our highland region is covered by forests. Do you see from the map how large an area this region covers? Actually the forested highland region is the largest of Guyana’s natural regions. It spans almost the entire country from north to South. Forest covered mountains and highland are the main features of this region. Can you name the main mountains or mountain ranges in Guyana? Yes, these include the Pakaraima Mountains, the Kanuku Mountains and the Kamoa Mountains.

Forests have developed naturally over the ages or they may have been cultivated. Can you name areas of the world where forests can be found? How many did you name?

Look at the table below.

Forests are important to man. They are one of the world’s most abundant resources. They covered more than one – quarter of the earth’s entire land area long ago. Is that so today?

Many forests all over the world are not being properly managed. What is the management of the forest called? Yes, it’s called silviculture. The goal of good management of the forest is to have good products without damaging the land or other trees. It is also important to plant young trees so that the forest lives on for many many years. It is important also to preserve the animal life that exists there.

Can you give examples of the rich animal life found in our forests? Many persons come from near and far to see the flora and fauna of our forests. (What name do we give to these persons?)

Many persons visit our forests to see our forest life.

Until next week learn as much as you can about forests. Goodbye, Boys and Girls
