Pollard finishes third in Men’s 45-54 division

Reagan Pollard clinched a third-place finish in the Men’s 45-54 division in the BCQS Internatio­nal Squash Tournament following a convincing 3-0 victory over Barbadian Don Benn.

Pollard prevailed in straight sets 11-3, 114, and 16-14. Pollard, on Friday, lost to Robert Cameron of Barbados in the semifinal section 7-11, 6-11, and 6-11.

Also on Friday, the duo of Robin Low and Dennis Dias also recorded divisional losses. Low went down to Jamaican Stewart Maxell in straight sets in the Men’s 55-64 segment. Low lost 4-11, 7-11, and 6-11.

Similarly, Dias was defeated by Keith Boyea of St. Vincent and the Grenadines 1-3 in the Men’s 65 and Over section. Dias lost 711, 11-9, 5-11, and 7-11.

Guyana’s Desmond Amsterdam suffered a unanimous decision loss in Bangkok, Thailand, yesterday when the second and final Olympic boxing qualifying tournament continued.

Fighting in the 80kg weight class, Amsterdam, who to his credit fought valiantly, was outclassed by his Dominican Republic opponent, Cristian Pinales, across five rounds.

The bout, which was judged by Brendan McGarrigle (Ireland), Johany Maden (France), Fardad Sadegh Poor (Iran), Muhamad Arisa (Indonesia), and Alisher Palvanov (Uzbekistan), had all five scores in favour of Pinales, handing him the unanimous decision.

McGarrigle, Maden, Sadegh Poor, and Arisa all had Pinales winning at 30-27, while Palvanov had him winning at 30-26.

While Keevin Allicock won via a third-round RSC (Referee Stopped Contest) on Friday, Guyana’s two other pugilists, Joel Williamson and Emmanuel Pompey, are still to fight in the preliminar­y rounds of the 63.5kg and 92kg categories, respective­ly.

Williamson will jump into action today, while Pompey is set to do battle tomorrow.

Allicock, who booked progressio­n to the round of 32, will fight Batuhan Ciftci of Turkey on Tuesday. Allicock is the only member of the group who has attended a previous Olympics, having fought at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
