Volcanoes defeat Guyana Jaguars by two wickets in thriller
The Windward Islands Volcanoes defeated Guyana Jaguars by two wickets in their fourth round, Group B game of the Regional Super50 competition at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts, here yesterday.
Replying to the Guyana Jaguars 209 for nine off 50 overs the Volcanoes erupted in the final overs of the innings to reach 210 -8 off 49.3 overs and secure their second win over the Guyanese.
Earlier the Jaguars were indebted to Royston Crandon who scored an unbeaten half century and medium pacer Paul Wintz for the somewhat respectable total after they lost early wickets.
However, Crandon 68 not out and Wintz 38 not out along with Leon Johnson’s 29 helped spare the team’s blushes.
Shane Shillingford was the pick of the bowlers with 2-22 while Mervyn Matthew supported with 2-31.
In reply, the Volcanoes who were staring down the barrel of defeat at one stage were indebted to unbeaten knocks from Shillingford and Kerron Cottoy whose unbroken ninth wicket stand saw them home. Both batsmen ended on 21 not out while Sunil Ambris top scored with 56.
Other useful knocks came from Liam Sebastien 27 and Tyrone Theophile 24.
Wintz 2-16, Veerasammy Permaul 226, Royston Crandon 2-56 were the principal wicket takers.
Crandon’s bowling at the death marred what was an otherwise good all round performance as he was struck for three sixes in his last two overs as Cottoy and Shillingford threw caution to the winds. (See details in tomorrow’s issue)
