Internatio­nal meet carded for Grenada next year

ST.GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC-Grenada has announced plans to stage an internatio­nal track and field event at the newly built stadium next year.

Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell made the announceme­nt during a news briefing in St. George’s and also provided details about the initiative.

“We are looking at a very special initiative, an internatio­nal athletic event next year April, with the Ministry of Sports, Grenada Athletic Associatio­n and a private sector group,” Prime Minister Mitchell announced.

“And I want to say the initiative for this, we were in fact planning. But the initiative is led by the private sector group, led by Michael Bascombe, who discussed this with us and we were very happy to move in that direction.” The meet is proposed for early April which will culminate a week of athletics in Grenada, starting with the annual intercol championsh­ips at the National Stadium.

Dr. Mitchell said he has already reached out to some regional colleagues about collaborat­ing with this event.

He said that Bahamas Sports icon Chris Brown has also agreed to play a major role in the invitation­al meet.

“I have already discussed with my friends in Jamaica, the Minister of Sports and the Prime Minister, hoping to get their support and to ensure their athletes come here for that internatio­nal event,” the Prime Minister said.

“Chris Brown from the Bahamas, who has an internatio­nal meet, he has agreed to take a major role in the organizati­on of that event next year, together with our local committee”.

It will be the first major internatio­nal track and field meet at the new stadium which was opened on January 23.

The stadium, which is listed among the IAAF Class One Certified Athletics Facilities, hosted the CARIFTA Games in March.
