Team Guyana sits atop the medal table following the first of two days of track and field action in this year’s Inter Guiana Goodwill Games.

Usual suspects Avon Samuels, Kenisha Phillips, Compton Caesar, Tabitha Bowman and lesser celebrated athletes helped Guyana to run away with 21 medals (10 gold) under the bright lights of the floodlit National Track and Field Centre.

Outstanding performances by field event athlete, Tramaine Beckles (javelin throw) also ensured that Guyana went into today’s final day with an 89point lead (177-88) ahead of Suriname.

French Guiana is not competing in this year’s edition of the traditional U-19 tri-nation Games.

The highlight of yesterday was perhaps the girls 400m which brought the crowd to its feet as Samuels turn on the jets in the final 200m to win emphatically in 58.09s.

Caesar and Phillips were their usual dominant selves, easily winning the marquee 100m and anchoring their 4x100m relay teams to victory.

The duo is poised to record sprint doubles when the 200m event is contested today.

Bowman, added more hardware to her collection after cruising to victory in the girls 3000m final.

Day 2 which starts at 16:00hrs will be highlighted with the 200m, 800m, 3000m, 5000m and the 4x400m relays.
