Infrastructure ministry, city council partner to remedy South Ruimveldt flooding

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) and the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) are to commence drainage works in South Ruimveldt today to rectify issues that lead to frequent flooding in some sections of the community.

The works, which will run for eight weeks, were slated to begin yesterday but the team was prevented as a result of the inclement weather experienced between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Neilson McKenzie, Community Coordinator attached to the MPI, explained to reporters, that the ministry decided to intervene in the drainage situation since all intervention in the past failed to ease flooding in the community.

McKenzie explained that the works being done in the community would also facilitate drainage in North Ruimveldt, which is also severely affected by flooding. “The programme of works will focus on areas between Penny Lane, Fern Drive and Blue Sackie Drive bordered by Aubrey Barker Road and Caneview Avenue,” according to Deputy Mayor Sherod Duncan.

Among the works to be undertaken are the rehabilitation of six culverts on Aubrey Barker Road, the cleaning of drains and alleyways, and road repairs with asphaltic concrete.

Duncan told Stabroek News that contractors and labourers are drawn from the constituency and would be working under the supervision of the technical advisors from the MPI.

He asked residents and road users to accommodate any minor inconvenience as they work in the interest of the constituency.
