IPL Badree flickers, Gayle Marlon Samuels signs flops and RCB lose for Delhi Daredevils

-

BANGALORE, India, CMC – West Indies legspinner Samuel Badree made two early strikes but they were not enough to save Royal Challengers Bangalore from a heavy seven-wicket defeat to Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League here Thursday.

Defending an inadequate 134 all out off their 20 overs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the hosts started brightly when Trinidadian Badree removed both openers to reduce Lions to 23 for two in the fifth over.

Ishan Kishan missed a sweep at a straight delivery in the third over and was hit in front for 16 while danger man Brendon McCullum picked out AB de Villiers in the deep in Badree’s next over.

However, Australian Aaron Finch blasted 72 off 34 deliveries, in a 92-run third wicket stand with captain Suresh Raina (34 not out) which pulled the innings around.

Badree had two for 29 from his three overs.

Earlier, superstar opener Chris Gayle failed for the second straight innings with a single digit score as RCB failed to get going after being asked to bat.

The left-hander was the second to fall in the fifth over for eight, edging a defensive prod at Aussie seamer Andrew Tye to be caught behind.

Pawan Negi, batting at number seven, top-scored with 32 while Kedar Jadhav chipped in with 31, but were the only two of the top order to pass 10.

The defeat for RCB – their sixth in eight outings – left them one from bottom of the standings and facing early elimination from the tournament. NEW DELHI, India, CMC – West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels has been drafted in by Delhi Daredevils for the remainder of their Indian Premier League campaign, as a replacement for injured South African wicketkeeer/batsman Quinton de Kock.

The 36-year-old Jamaican, who went unsold in the IPL auction this year, joins a franchise that already has West Indies teammate Carlos Brathwaite on their roster.

Samuels is represented West Indies in 71 Tests, 187 one-day internationals and 55 twenty20 internationals, but was not selected for the ongoing Test series against Pakistan in the Caribbean.

He was a key member or the side that won the T20 World Cup in India last April, hitting a brilliant Man-of-the-Match unbeaten 85 in the final to see West Indies to a dramatic win over England.

Samuels, who last played for the Windies in the four-match T20 series against Pakistan last month, links up with a Daredevils side which has struggled this season and lie rock bottom of the IPL standings on four points with just two wins in six outings.

De Kock was ruled out of the tournament after sustaining an injury to his right index finger on last month’s tour of New Zealand.

Daredevils play their next game against leaders Kolkata Knight Riders today at Eden Gardens.
