Murder down 27% up to May – Police
-road fatalities have declined by 29%
The Guyana Police Force says it has recorded a 27% decline in murder and a 29% decrease in road fatalities up to the end of May, 2017 relative to the same period last year.
In its analysis up to May, it said that there was a 3% drop in Robbery Under Arms where firearms were used; a 1% decline in Robbery Under Arms where instruments other than firearms were used; a 14% fall in Robberies where no instruments were used; a 60% surge in Robbery with Violence; a 10% drop in Robbery with Aggravation; a 60% rise in Larceny from the Person; a 10% increase in Rape; a 1% decrease in Burglary and a 21% decrease in Break and Enter and Larceny.
A breakdown in the categories of the forty-seven murders up to the end of May is as follows:
● Disorderly – 22 ● Domestic – 09 ● Robbery – 08 ● Execution-style – 04 ● Unknown – 03 ● Others – 01
Firearms Seized
Sixty-four illegal firearms have been taken off the streets so far for this year, compared to twenty-nine for the corresponding period last year, the analysis said.
The breakdown is as follow:
● Pistols – 39 ● Revolvers – 08 ● Shotgun – 09 ● Rifles – 08

In relation to Traffic Management, there was a 29.3% decline in fatal accidents, the police said. Forty-four fatalities were recorded at the end of May, compared to sixty-two for the same period last year, a decrease of 29%; there was also a 75% fall in death of children. Serious, Minor and Damage accidents also fell by 16.4%, 32% and 36.3% respectively.
Twenty-eight thousand eight hundred and twenty-two cases were made from Jan-May, 2017 of which 7,475 were for speeding, 1,402 for Breach of Conditions of Road Service Licence/Music, 1.040 for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, 732 for using cell-phone while driving, 664 for Breach of Traffic Light Signals and 646 for tinted motor vehicles.
