Campbellville man fatally stabbed after row at Meadow Bank Wharf

-

An altercation between some fishermen at the Meadow Bank Wharf ended in bloodshed on Thursday evening with one being fatally stabbed to his chest.

Chan Wen Wong, 42, a fisherman/ labourer of 14 Seaforth Street, Campbellville was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police in a press release said that stringent efforts are being made to apprehend the suspect who answers to the sobriquet ‘Chokadag’. He fled the scene after the incident which occurred around 21:40 hrs.

Investigations, the police said, revealed that Wong and the suspect had an altercation which resulted into a physical confrontation.

“They were parted by onlookers and the victim walked away only to be pursued by the suspect who whipped out a sharp object and stabbed him to the left region of his chest and fled the scene,” the release explained.

Wong collapsed and was taken to the GPH where he died.

Reports reaching Stabroek News revealed that ‘Chokadag’ and two fishermen were engaged in a conversation when Wong approached and was confronted by the suspect.

During the process, Wong and ‘Chokadag’ had an exchange of words which resulted in ‘Chokadag’ becoming annoyed and he allegedly dealt Wong a cuff to his face.

They were separated by another fisherman after which Wong walked away. However, ‘Chokadag’ followed Wong and they ended up in a fight during which Wong was stabbed.

When Stabroek News visited the dead man’s home yesterday it was tightly secured. Persons at the scene were also tightlipped about the incident.

However, the police have since obtained several statements and investigations are ongoing.
