Upsets indication of competitive nature of teams

-

Three Peat Promotions, organisers of the inaugural Guinness Cage Football Championship have said that the unexpected defeats of several of the high profile teams is a clear indication of the event’s unpredictable and competitive nature.

The tournament has witnessed losses for several of the household names, such as Broad Street, Tiger Bay, Sparta Boss, Dave and Celina’s All-Stars, Champion Boys, North East La Penitence, Gold is Money and Sophia.

“Two days of competition has produced some surprising performances, with the notable ones coming from MBK All Stars and Ol Skool Ballers, the two teams responsible for the exodus of established teams Sophia and Broad Street respectively,” a release from the organisers stated.

“Also highlighting the two days of competition were the elimination of national Guinness champions Dave & Celena All Stars, giving weight to the serious preparations of perceived underdog teams,” it added.

The struggle of the early favourite Sparta Boss, indicates that predicting an eventual winner will be an unenviable task for fans and enthusiasts.

“To add legitimacy to the competition is the fact that Guyana’s most successful Futsal team Sparta Boss no longer drives fear into opponents, but rather seems to be the one intimidated by the sight of rivals, a conclusion drawn by their recent wretched performances.

“A team that has split fans in terms of allegiance, mainly due to their undisputed dominance over a prolonged period, they still manage to remain the crowd puller among all the teams and their presence could determine a tournament’s success. As the saying goes ‘success breathes enemies’ and this tested and proven idiom still holds true in relation to Sparta Boss,” the release added.

With the elimination round quickly approaching and several of the established teams possibly facing an early exit, the chances of an emerging team clinching the title is not beyond the realm of imagination.

“It might take a massive outpouring of residents from the respective communities to come out and add critical support to increase the chances of their teams making it to the latter stages. Should the fans from the respective communities grace the arena with their presence, odds of a fascinating battle for the prize paying positions are even more compelling,” stated the release.

The event resumes Tuesday at the same venue with another eight group matches. At 19:00hrs Hustlers battles Mocha, while from 19:30hrs, Pike Street Sophia engages Albouystown-A and North Ruimveldt opposes Ol Skool Ballers at 20:00hrs.

The fourth fixture will pit Gold is Money against Tiger Bay at 20:30hrs, while MBK AllStars face off with Agricola Champion Boys at 21:00hrs and Future Stars tackle Showstoppers at 21:30hrs.

In the final two fixtures, Back Circle tackles Leopold Street at 22:00hrs and Sparta Boss opposes Albouystown-B from 22:30hrs. Following the end of the round-robin stage, the top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the quarterfinal.
