UDFA Senior League League leaders Winners Connection edge Silver Shattas 2 - 1

Winners Connection maintained their grip atop the Upper Demerara Football Associatio­n (UDFA) 2017/2018 Senior League, overcoming Silver Shattas 2-1 on Wednesday, at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden.

The league leaders conceded a first half lead to their fierce rival, as Robin Adams netted in the 25th minute.

The speedy Adams, found the back of the net with a gliding header across the body of the goalkeeper, after racing onto a lobbed pass from a free kick which evaded the backline.

However, Keon Sears equalised in the 56th minute, converting from the penalty spot, after a defender had handled the ball inside the area. Stepping up to the mark, the veteran midfielder sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, as he buried his strike into the right corner.

The come from behind victory was then sealed in the 81st minute, as Marmarlaqu­e Davidson scored, directing his unchalleng­ed header into the back of the net, after his initial shot was parried into his onrushing path by the goalkeeper.

With the win, Winners Connection climbed to nine points. For the loser, they remain on one point and drop to the seventh position.

Meanwhile, Blueberry Hill secured their first win of the event, edging High Stars 1-0. Malvin Denn found the back of the net with a free-kick in the 51st minute.

Due to the win, Blueberry Hill rise to sixth place on three points. On the other hand, High Stars drop into the cellar position.

The competitio­n resumes today at the same venue with another doublehead­er. At 19:00hrs, Botofago will oppose Amelia’s Ward Panthers, while Netrockers will battle Topp XX from 21:00hrs.

On Sunday at the same venue, Winners Connection will match skills with Eagles from 19:00hrs and Silver Shattas will tackle High Stars at 21:00hrs.
