Milerock, GDF move into Super 16 football semis

Milerock and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) earned their semi-final berths in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) ‘Super 16 Year-end Classic’, defeating Den Amstel and Winners Connection respective­ly on Monday.

Staged at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Bourda, Milerock downed Den Amstel 3-1. Denzil Fordyce handed the home side the lead, compliment­s of a 32nd minute strike.

The visitors fired back to level proceeding­s, as Gideon Payne found the back of the net in the 47th minute.

However, Milerock retook the advantage in the 53rd minute, with Fordyce slamming his effort into the back of the net to complete a deserved brace.

The win was then sealed in the 90th+1 minute, with Lorenzo Miller making his presence felt via a wellplaced shot.

On the other hand, GDF overcame Winners Connection 3-2 on penalty kicks, after regulation and extra time ended 2-2. Kenard Simon and Travis Simon scored in the 11th and 58th minute each for the army unit.

For the Lindeners, Marley Davidson etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 28th and 59th minute. The tournament continues today with the final two quarterfin­al matches.

The event which is being sponsored by Top Brandz Distributo­rs under the Corona Beer Brand, concludes on January 1st at the National Stadium, Providence.

Winner of the event will pocket $2,000,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up will collect $1,000,000 and the respective accolade.

On the other hand, the third and fourth place finishers will walk away with $500,000 and $250,000 correspond­ingly.
