CAC Games: Guyana squash team suffer mixed fortunes

Guyana’s squash team began the team event at this year’s Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) with a win and loss yesterday in Colombia.

The men’s team strolled past Panama 3-0 with Jason Ray Khalil defeating Adrian Prado 11-1, 11-0, 11-4 while Sunil Seth got past David Varela 11-2, 114, 11-5.

Nyron Joseph completed the sweep without dropping a point, winning 11-0, 11-0, 11-0 in the final match.

The team will next face number two seed and the host Colombia. The female team however lost to Barbados 1-2. Taylor Fernandes dropped another five-set match to Amanda Haywood 2-3 in the opening game.

Fernandes lost the first set 9-11 but struck back to take the second 11-7. Haywood took the third 12-10 in a seesaw battle while Fernandes levelled the match 2-2 after taking the fourth set 11-7. Victory, however, eluded her as she lost the final set and the match 8-11.

Fernandes’ bronze medal-winning doubles panther Ashley Khalil, on the other hand, won her match against Jada Smith – Padmore 11-6, 11-2, 11-7 while Mary Fung – A – Fat lost to Megan Best 6-11, 3-11, 4-11.

The Guyanese ladies will next play host Colombia, today.

In hockey action, Guyana women’s team suffered another defeat after going down to Mexico 0-2 in their final group encounter. Fernanda Oviedo and Michel Navarro scored for the Mexicans in the fifth and 31st minute to hand the local unit their third defeat.
