Eagles, UG in hard-fought basketball wins

Eagles and University of Guyana [UG] Trojans battled to hard-fought wins in the U23 section, when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Associatio­n [GABA] League Championsh­ip, continued on Wednesday.

Staged at the Burnham Court, Eagles clawed past Pacesetter­s 82-79. Sherland Gillis recorded a game high 29 points in the win, with Shamar Huntley the next best scorer with 18 points.

Adding 10 points was Nickosie Allicock. For the loser, Zion Gray tallied 20 points, while Jude Corlette supported with 14 points.

Chipping in with nine and seven points were Kwesi Roberts and Roger John respective­ly.

The contest started positively for Pacesetter­s, as they secured a marginal 17-16 advantage at the end of the first period.

The aforesaid lead grew in the second quarter, as the home side outscored their opponent 25-21 to enter the halftime interval ahead at 4237.

However, Eagles reduced the deficit in the always pivotal third stanza, tallying 20 points, while restrictin­g Pacesetter­s to 17 points to trail 59-57 heading into the final period.

The come-from-behind result was then sealed, as Eagles outscored Pacesetter­s 25-20. Meanwhile, Trojans edged Pepsi Sonics 65-64.

The duo of Darrel Williams and Jabari Joseph tallied 16 points each. They were assisted by Dellon Patterson and Kadeem Peterkin, scorers of 13 and 11 points respective­ly.

On the other side, Lemuel Grant led the way with 16 points, while Jamal Booker and Manasseh Primo tallied 13 and eight points correspond­ingly.

The tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue with another round of matches.
