Guyana women beat Togo, men defeat Macau

The Guyanese contingent at the 43rd World Chess Olympiad currently ongoing in Batumi, Georgia enjoyed success in round three with the women’s team beating Togo 4-0 and the men coming out on top against Macau 2.5-1.5.

Women FIDE Master (WFM) Maria Varona-Thomas, defeated Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) Akua Kosife Essu, who is rated well below her with 1355 FIDE Rating compared to the naturalize­d Guyanese with 1739.

WCM Sheriffa Ali and Nellisha Johnson, the only two other rated players in the match up ensured Guyana’s perfect round beating Ivana Claudia Eyram De Souza and Sename Ave Maria Dzolgo respective­ly while Sasha Shariff, the unrated player on the local team earned herself a win over Ama Edoh.

The fourth round saw Guyana unable to cope with the likes of Jordan losing all four matches to higher ranked players apart from Varona-Thomas who lost to WCM Odeh Aseel with a 1647 rating. Anthony Drayton

Over in the men’s division, Guyana bounced back in round three with captain, Candidate Master (CM) Anthony Drayton and Glenford Corlette notching up wins over CM Seak Hin Leong and Weng TuIp respective­ly.

CM Taffin Khan, who already had a win the previous round, earned himself a draw with Tong Kuan Mak while Loris Nathoo Maria varona-Thomas

lost to CM Joel Celis.

In the fourth round, CM Khan earned another draw, the only points coming to the Guyana men’s team in the round against FIDE Master Raymond Song who is rated at 2305 compared to Khan with 1900 points.

The female team will play Tunisia and the male team will face Oman in round five. This year’s season of cricket across the various formats of competitio­ns organized by the Georgetown Cricket Associatio­n is in the ‘death overs’ with semifinal action taking place this weekend while a new tournament, the Friends of Cricket under-17 100 overs tournament bowls off.

With Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) already in the final of the GISE/Star Party Rental/Trophy Stall, first-division two-day competitio­n, they will be keen to see who will emerge champions when Police Sports Club hosts Guyana Industrial Cooperatio­n (GNIC). Bowl off time is set at 10.30hrs.

Meanwhile, last weekend, Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) defeated Police Sports Club to book their final spot and will know who they will face when the dust settles today between the University of Guyana and DCC at DCC in the New Building Society 40-overs second division tournament.

This match will be somewhat of a revenge match with DCC eliminatin­g UG from the first-division two-day tournament in the semifinal and is expected to have a full deck of supporters at the usually vibrant Queenstown ground. Bowl off time is

Also, the Friends of Cricket under-17 100 overs tournament will bowl off today with GCC hosting Bel Air Rubis from 09.30hrs. The tournament will see the first team batting a maximum of 55 overs with the remaining 45 overs for the second team. However, should the team batting first be bowled out within the 55 overs, the remaining overs will be added to the team batting second’s total number of overs. Tomorrow, Everest Cricket Club will take on Transport Sports Club at Muslim Youth Organizati­on, Woolford Avenue and DCC will host Malteenoes Sports Club.
