Defending champions GCC hammer Saints in opener -Hikers go down to Old Fort

Defending ladies’ champions, GBTI GCC began the 2018 edition of the Diamond Mineral Water Indoor Hockey Festival with a crushing win over Saints on Wednesday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hal (CASH).

It was a sharp showing by the GCC ladies, who won the match 6-0 with Marzana Fiedtkou and captain, Sonia Jardine both recording hat tricks.

Fiedtkou converted twice during the first half as GCC led 3-0 while Jardine, who scored the other first-half goal, netted two more in the second half to complete her hat trick; Fiedtkou scored the other second-half goal to reach her milestone.

The other female match of the evening saw the 2018 national champions, Woodpecker Hikers going down to Old Fort 1-3 in the first upset of the festival.

Minosodia Culpepper orchestrat­ed the win for Old Fort with double strikes which found the back of the net in the third and 40th minute, respective­ly while Bushani Kaladeen scored the other. Nicole Eastman was the lone scorer for the Hikers unit.

In the men’s matchup, Old Fort defeated Saints 32 in a close contest.

Meanwhile, the lone veterans match of the evening saw GCC Vintage defeating Old Fort 5-2 in their encounter.

Scoring for the winners was Patrick Edghill - who scored twice – while Devin Hooper, Kevin Spencer and Philip Fernandes scored the other goals.

John Abrahams scored both goals for the losers.
