Health Min­istry driver charged with mil­lion­dol­lar fuel fraud

A driver for the Min­istry of Pub­lic Health was yesterday ac­cused of fraud­u­lently ob­tain­ing a lit­tle over $1 mil­lion in diesel from GuyOil.

Mark Sa­muels, 29, of 276 South Ruimveldt, stood in the court­room of Chief Mag­is­trate Ann McLen­nan in Ge­orge­town, where he was read the charge.

The charge stated that be­tween De­cem­ber 12th, 2017 and Jan­uary 7th, 2018, at Ge­orge­town, with in­tent to de­fraud, Sa­muels ob­tained $1,054,789 in Diesel from GuyOil on Re­gent Street by pre­sent­ing a cheque in the name of Clyde Fowler, know­ing same to be forged.

At­tor­ney Darren Wade, who rep­re­sented the ac­cused, urged the court to grant his client rea­son­able bail.

Po­lice prose­cu­tor Gor­don Mans­field made no ob­jec­tion to bail be­ing granted but re­quested that con­di­tions be ap­plied.

Sa­muels was later granted his

re­lease on $70,000 bail and he was also or­dered to re­port to the Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tion Depart­ment (CID) Head­quar­ters, Eve Leary, ev­ery Fri­day at 4 pm un­til the com­ple­tion of the trial.

The ac­cused is set to make his next court ap­pear­ance on De­cem­ber 14th.

Mean­while, a busi­ness­woman, Lil­lian Ake­ung, was charged with re­ceiv­ing pales of diesel that were stolen or un­law­fully ob­tained by Sa­muels.

It is al­leged that be­tween De­cem­ber 12th, 2017 and Jan­uary 7th, 2018, at Ge­orge­town, Ake­ung re­ceived pales of diesel, val­ued at $427,677 from Mark Sa­muels, know­ing same to have been stolen or un­law­fully ob­tained from the Min­istry of Ed­u­ca­tion.

Ap­pear­ing on her be­half was at­tor­ney Mark Wal­dron, who re­quested that his client be re­leased on her own recog­ni­sance.

Prose­cu­tor Mans­field made no ob­jec­tion to this de­fen­dant be­ing granted bail but also re­quested that con­di­tions be ap­plied.

Ake­ung was later granted her re­lease on $150,000 bail and also or­dered to re­port to the CID Head­quar­ters ev­ery Fri­day at 4 pm un­til the com­ple­tion of the trial.

The mat­ter was ad­journed un­til De­cem­ber 21st.
