Clerk remanded over assault of police officer

-

A 26-year-old clerk who allegedly slapped a police officer in the presence of other officers at the Brickdam Police Station was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with three separate offences.

The accused, Mark Edwards, denied all three charges read to him by Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It was alleged that on February 14, 2019, at the Brickdam Police Station, Edwards assaulted peace officer Carl Pedro who was executing his duty.

Another charge alleged that on February 14, at the Brickdam Police Station, Edwards behaved in a disorderly manner.

It was further alleged that on the same date and at the same time, Edwards resisted peace officer Carl Pedro who was executing his duties.

According to Prosecutor Seon Blackman, on the said date, Pedro, who was performing his duties, asked the defendant to switch lanes, to which Edwards refused and he was then escorted to the Brickdam Police Station. He further related that it was at the police station, in the presence of other officers, that Edwards started behaving disorderly, after which he slapped and hit Pedro.

Prosecutor Blackman objected to bail, citing the prevalence of the offence.

Edwards was subsequently remanded to prison and is next scheduled to appear in court on February 27, 2019. A businessman was yesterday charged with trafficking over 600 grammes of cannabis.

It is alleged that on February 18, 2019 at Lodge Housing Scheme, David Bazilio, 34, allegedly had in his possession 627 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

After pleading not guilty to the charge, which was read by Magistrate Faith McGusty of the city’s magistrates’ court, Bazilio explained to the court that he was forced by the officers to take ownership of the drugs when he had nothing to do with it. The drugs were reportedly found in the house of the mother of his child when he was there to pick his daughter up, however, several persons were in and out of the house at the time.

The police prosecutor objected to bail being granted to him based on the prevalence of the offence, the amount of drugs mentioned in the charge and the fact that the bag of suspected cannabis was allegedly found on him.

Bazilio was placed on $250,000 bail on the condition that he report to the East La Penitence Police Station. The matter was adjourned until March 13, 2019 for his next hearing.
