Arjoon keen on playing senior CASA at home

In 2018 he missed three crucial international assignments but Guyana’s top male squash player Alex Arjoon is focused on returning to national duties in August when Guyana hosts the senior Caribbean Squash Tournament.

Last year Arjoon opted out of participating in the 2018 Commonwealth Games (Australia), the CAC Games (Colombia) and the PanAm qualifiers (Cayman Islands) to focus on elevating his career outside of the world of squash.

His hiatus, however, may soon come to an end and see him competing alongside Sunil Seth, Jason-Ray Khalil and Nyron Joseph as Guyana bids to capture gold in the upcoming Caribbean tournament.

“With regards to CASA, I don’t know what will happen as yet. I’m actually in the middle of my professional life but my plan is to definitely play if I can,” Arjoon revealed to Stabroek Sport on Sunday last after capturing his first Handicap Tournament.

His championship run on Sunday was his seventh win overall and first in a handicap tournament and he is keen to add quite a few more to his collection as he harbours plans to end his career as the most decorated local senior player.

According to the young man, the squash association revealed that he needs to surpass 10 individual titles, which is the current record held by former Caribbean champion Garfield Wiltshire, if he desires to be the new record holder.

Arjoon also shared his thoughts on the juniors who were on show during the last week as they gear up for the Junior Caribbean Squash tournament in the summer.

“I watched a few of the matches and I have to say that the juniors are highly talented… and I’m so impressed with how competitive they are because that is super important when you want to compete at a high level and honestly, I’m happy to see that because we have a lot of Squash talent in Guyana and we need to continue building on that.”

The Junior Caribbean championship is set for Trinidad this year with Guyana, the former 12time defending champions, aiming to regain their regional supremacy.
