-Verwey is new Vice President

-

Long-serving member David Fernandes was reelected to serve as president of the Guyana Squash Association (GSA).

Fernandes was elected unchallenged for the post on Friday evening at the association’s Annual General Meeting and election of office bearers at the Georgetown Club.

Fernandes will have Owen Verwey, who is the lone new face on the committee, as his deputy. The remainder of the committee will comprise Garfield Wiltshire as treasurer, Lorraine Ince-Carvalhal as secretary, and Annabelle Singh as the assistant secretary/treasurer.

Meanwhile, former president of the association Robin Low will serve as chairperson for the Clubs Committee while Juanita Fernandes will serve as chairperson for the Junior Affairs Committee.

Tiffany Solomon, who has been doing an excellent job organising the association’s tournaments, will once again be the chairperson for the Tournament Committee while Suzanne DeAbreu will head up the Fundraising Committee.

Fernandes, in a recent interview with this newspaper said that the association has three main areas of focus for the year.

“The focus this year is three-fold. One is preparing the juniors for Trinidad, and that’s a big focus. Generally, we’ll have a good team and I believe we will do well there.

“We have the senior women’s team heading to the PanAm Games in July and then we have senior CASA where we’ll be hosting it here…and we have been working to solidifying accommodations and sponsors and stuff like that because we need to be prepared fully,” Fernandes had said.

He noted that the courts at the Racket Centre and Georgetown Club are ready for action.

One hundred athletes from seven different countries will be descending on Georgetown for that championship.

To achieve all that will definitely require the usual prudent approach of the GSA and its new leadership.
