Police hunting suspects over chopping of cousins

The police are currently on the hunt for two suspects in relation to the chopping of cousins: Nirpaul Mangal and Desmond Sharzaman during last week at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara.

Contacted for a an update on the matter yesterday afternoon, Divisional Commander Calvin Brutus told Stabroek News that investigators are currently on the hunt for the duo who remain on the lam.

“We currently have the names of two individuals that we are looking for”, Brutus said.

The attack occurred around 9pm last Thursday at Middle Street, Goedverwagting during which Mangal, called ‘Rohan,’ 38, a body work mechanic of Lot 28 Middle Street, Goedverwagting, and Sharzaman, 41, a construction worker of Lot 19 Goedverwagting were severely chopped about their bodies.

Both men sustained chop wounds to their heads, hands, back and chest and were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where Sharzaman was treated and sent away.

Mangal who was admitted was discharged yesterday afternoon and is at home recovering.

Mangal owns and operates a workshop. Sharzaman works with him as a construction worker.

While the motive for the attack remains unclear, Mangal, who sustained the brunt of the injuries, believes he was the target.

He previously told Stabroek News that he believed that the attack was either as a result of a failed robbery attempt or an act of revenge orchestrated by one of his employees who was fired earlier in the day.
