Harding, Velazquez laud South American beach games experience

-

Guyana’s Beach Volleyball pair, Juan Velazquez and Vance Harding said the experience they gained from participating at the just-concluded South American Beach Games in Rosario, Argentina will stand them in good stead in the future.

Stabroek News previously reported that the duo lost their opening matches against Ecuador and Chile number one sides at the championship.

They were still in with a chance of advancing but failed to do so after they were defeated by Chile’s number two side 17-21, 12-21 in their final match.

Coach Levi Nedd, commenting on the duo’s showing, said: “Guyana lost despite attacking and defensive plays.”

Meanwhile, Velazquez admitted that the competitors at the championships were hard to get around but noted that Guyana was commended at the end of the games for the way they performed.

“Generally speaking, I think it was a great opportunity to compete and get exposed at that level. It was a good competition. We did what we went to do but it was not enough.

“All of our opponents and most of the participants are ranked among the top seeds in South America with years of preparation and road experience.

“Although we lost, referees, athletes and some coaches approached me to congratulate us, expressing that they are very satisfied with our performance, highlighting we possess a great foundation and if we can compete more often at this level the results must come.”

Harding also pointed out the challenges of the tour but noted that the experience has given him the belief and confidence that Guyana can compete at the region’s highest level.
