Jefford Track and Field Classic postponed to next year

Add the Jefford Track and Field Classic to the list of 2020 sports casualties due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 11th edition of the event which was scheduled to run off next weekend at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground in Linden has been pushed back to next year due to the deadly virus.

According to a release from the Jefford Track and Field Classic organisers, due to the social distancing rules and the restrictiv­e curfew that is in place, “We have decided to postpone the event until Sunday August 8, 2021 in Linden.”

The release continued “We anticipate that you will continue to support this event that is now a national tradition in the mining community. This event has hosted several of the Caribbean’s most popular athletes in Guyana since 2010.

“The media has played a prominent role in the developmen­t of this event in the Linden community and has added immense value to the activities. Without your support, our success would not have been possible.

“We therefore take this opportunit­y to extend our profound gratitude to you and all our stakeholde­rs for your contributi­on to the success of Guyana’s biggest athletics championsh­ips. In addition, we would like to thank the following partners for their support-:ExxonMobil, Ansa McAl Trading Limited, National Sports Commission, Let’s Bet Sports, DeSinco Trading, Andrew’s Supermarke­t, MVP Sports, Antarctic Maintenanc­e and Repairs, R&D Engineerin­g Inc., Fire Side Grill and Chill, Jai Signs and Designs, Grill Kings and Gordon Gilhuys.”
