Jagdeo expresses gratitude to public for support
PPP General Secretary, Bharrat Jagdeo, recently sworn in as Vice President expressed yesterday gratitude to the supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) for their backing over the past months leading up to the party’s victory and said that the country is now faced with the “uphill” task of rebuilding.
“I am immensely grateful to the loyal supporters of the People’s Progressive Party and to the dedicated corps of volunteers, particularly the scores of youths, as well as a committed team of candidates and leaders, who have all, generously, given of their time and effort during the past several months, more so over the past five years - all of which led to a PPP/C victory at the March 2020 Elections,”
Jagdeo yesterday said in a post made on his Facebook page.
He said the hardest task which the country is currently faced with is rebuilding while noting that he is “deeply” moved by the confidence expressed by President Dr Irfaan Ali.
Jagdeo conveyed sincere gratitude to the thousands of persons who voted on March 2nd and to the pro-democracy forces in the local civil society, other political parties and the international community, who played a major role in the entire process.
“I owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands who voted on March 2; and to those who allowed us a chance to share our message for a progressive and prosperous future, as we worked tirelessly to expand our support base,” he said. “My sincerest thanks, also, to the pro-democracy forces in the local civil society, other political parties and the international community, as well as Guyanese at home and abroad, who made a difference for all Guyanese people by making their voices heard,” he added.
He stated that that the new Government is committed to the task at hand as they move forward. “Moving forward, I assure all Guyanese that the People’s Progressive Party is committed to the task at hand, as we advance together – all Guyanese – towards our common, progressive, and prosperous future,” Jagdeo said.
On Sunday afternoon, five months after the polls and after a series of legal battles, Ali was declared the winner of the presidential elections and subsequently sworn in as the country ninth executive president.

Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield submitted the results of the March 2nd general elections using the results of the national recount, which showed a victory for the PPP/C. The results of the recount have been challenged by the APNU+AFC, which has claimed that alleged irregularities that were uncovered compromised the integrity of the polls.
At the swearing in ceremony for Ali, Jagdeo was sworn in as Vice President. Anil Nandlall was sworn in as Attorney General and Gail Teixeira as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.
Their appointments were followed by those of nineteen new ministers, who were sworn in yesterday afternoon by Ali.
