The Cuyuni/Mazaruni region (Region Seven) has now recorded more than 100 cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) with the indigenous community of Batavia recording a sudden increase.

According to a statement by Regional Health Officer, Dr Edward Sagala, Region Seven now has 104 COVID-19 cases, including two deaths. Sagala added that as a result of the sudden spike in COVID-19 cases in Batavia Village, a seven-member team visited the area on Monday to conduct further screening and testing.

The team also visited several other communities including Kartabo and Agatash on the same date. On Tuesday, Sagala added, the team visited River’s View, Itaballi and Karrau Creek.

He reported that a total of 76 samples were taken from persons in the areas mentioned. Further, he said that the team will be heading to Wineperu, St. Mary’s Quarry, and Issano Landing sometime this week.

The statement disclosed that there are three persons in institutional quarantine while there are 22 persons in institutional isolation.

Meanwhile, Sagala also noted that a recent release from the Health Emergency Operations Committee (HEOC) identified Bartica as a high-risk location for COVID-19 due to data gathered indicating that persons who tested positive for the disease have had contact with the community in one way or another.

“We continue to remind residents of the region not to let your guard down. Please observe all COVID-19 prevention advisories. Be responsible. Protect yourselves, families and friends,” Sagala urged.
