Preparatio­ns underway for Ali’s inaugurati­on ceremony

Preparatio­ns for the inaugurati­on ceremony for Guyana’s 9th Executive President, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, scheduled to be held on Saturday at the National Cultural Centre, have begun.

A coordinato­r on the project, who asked to remain anonymous, told Stabroek News that preparatio­ns will be finalised today at 3pm, with minor things to be done tomorrow.

He emphasised that strict adherence to the COVID-19 guidelines will be the main focus and rigidly enforced, while physical distancing will be employed.

He explained that in addition to the interior seating, an area will be set up outside and attendees will have the the option to decide where they prefer to sit.

Large monitors will be available for viewing.

Secondly, he said, Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) personnel will be present and will have sanitising stations, temperatur­e testing and masks available. In the case where an individual does not have a mask, one will be provided. However, those persons refusing to use a mask will not be allowed to participat­e, as the wearing of a mask will be mandatory throughout the ceremony.

A medical facility will also be available for referrals.

While Stabroek News was present, it was observed that the Cultural Centre’s seats were being sanitised and parts of the building were undergoing repairs.

In addition, members of the joint services could be seen rehearsing for the Guard of Honour and Review of the Troops parade. Work was also being done to clean and beautify the surroundin­g area.

Access to the event will be by invitation only, however, the ceremony will be streamed live.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am, is expected to be accompanie­d by the requisite pomp and ceremony.
