Grave wants Windies Women to start competing again with the `Big Three’
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cricket West Indies (CWI), Johnny Grave has described the performance of the Women’s faction over the last few years as disappointing.
Grave was at the time was appearing on the “Let’s Talk” social media commentary where he revealed that it was not just the recent England tour that was substandard.
“The results over the last few years have generally been disappointing,” he said.
“We know we’ve got talented players and it’s a big focus for us to start improving results and start competing once again with the big three teams of England, India and Australia,” Grave explained.
The CEO reckoned that while the whitewash in England was unacceptable, there was positive feedback in the form of the side being able to compete.
He indicated that it was a priority to have the side be competitive but admitted it is difficult especially in light of the vast difference in resources.
“Women’s cricket is one of the priorities that we announced a couple years ago. It’s a challenge to compete with the big three, we know India, Australia and England have enormous resources and therefore they can put significant funds into women’s cricket,” he stated.
The Englishman believed that CWI has been on par, if not done more for the department on a scaled basis saying, “We probably do as much if not more than them in percentage terms, it’s just our pot is much smaller.”
Nevertheless, the CEO revealed that the new head coach, Courtney Walsh, has already begun to streamline plans to bring about a change in fortunes.
“Courtney Walsh is the new head coach and has done a lot of planning over the last couple weeks with Jimmy Adams, Director of Cricket but also doing a hand over with Andre Coley who took the team to England.”
Grave was appointment.
“It’s great to have a legend in Courtney Walsh now leading the women’s department. Jimmy Adams and the whole cricket department will give them all the support that he needs.”
