Key Region Eight bridge collapses

-GGMC organising emergency repairs

-

The bridge at Tiger Creek that is used as the main access way to and from Region Eight ( PotaroSiparuni) collapsed as a heavy- duty truck was crossing yesterday.

As a result, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission ( GGMC) has taken steps to effect emergency repairs as soon as possible.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the collapse of the bridge occurred around 12.45 pm, while the Brian Tiwarie-owned truck, GYY 2075, was crossing it.

In a brief statement, the GPF said the driver, Everett Paton, 43, of Lima, Essequibo Coast, was alone at the time and nothing was in the truck. He was not injured.

The statement noted that the bridge, which is 75ft in length and 18ft wide, is used daily by motorists to enter and exit Region Eight.

Meanwhile, the Department of Public Information ( DPI) reported the GGMC’s Board Secretary Jacques Foster as saying that a contractor was due to conduct an assessment for the emergency works.

“We have an ongoing contract for that section of road which is from Mango Landing to Mahdia. The contractor is on the ground as we speak. We have already mobilised him to the site for him to do the assessment for emergency works,” Foster was quoted as saying last evening.

“Our engineer is going to be going in there tomorrow to meet with the contractor to make sure whatever the contractor is assessing is of good standard and we are going to execute emergency works for that bridge through him,” he added.

The DPI said the GGMC remains in contact with the Ministry of Public Works on the issue.
