Petterson-Griffith steals the show at powerlifti­ng c/ships

Carlos Petterson-Griffith stole the show on his return to the platform when the Guyana Amateur Powerlifti­ng Federation hosted its Novices/ Juniors’ Qualifiers Championsh­ips yesterday at St Stanislaus College.

While Faraud Mohamed and Keisha Abrigo lifted the coveted best male and female overall Novices awards, the 93kg behemoth broke several records in his welcome back party.

After almost two years removed from competing due to a one-year suspension in 2019 (due to competing overseas without the consent of the federation) and COVID-19 measures last year, Petterson-Griffith dubbed ‘The Showstoppe­r’ chalked up the performanc­e of his career, setting new records in the deadlift and total.

The reigning national Strong Man champ recorded a Total of 822kgSquat­ting 307kg, Bench Pressing 165kg and Deadliftin­g 350kg

In his last outing, the 27 year-old had a Total of 800kg – Squatting 315kg; Bench Pressing 155kg and a Dead lifting 330kg.

The local force of nature who also competes with distinctio­n in bodybuildi­ng, stated that he has his sights set on representi­ng Guyana in August at the FESUPO/NAPF Championsh­ips in Orlando, Florida and November at the World Championsh­ips in Belarus.

Meanwhile, Mohamed of Space Gym, earned 57.67 good lift points to secure first place overall in the male novices and junior (equipped) categories in his debut outing on the platform.

The 16 year-old lifting in the 74kg class, had a best squat of 188.5kg, 112.5kg in the bench press and 200kg in the dead lift.

Of the four females competing, Abrigo, 29, emerged the overall victor with 71.45 good lift points.

The Exodus Gym product lifting in the 69kg class, had a best squat of 125kg, 52kg in the bench press and 160kg in the dead lift.

The next powerlifti­ng event, the Intermedia­te Championsh­ip is tentativel­y scheduled for July pending approval from the COVID-19 Task Force.
