Dharry looking for tune-up fight before world title shot

- (Emmerson Campbell)

“I will sharpen up over here and come and put on a show on for the people in Guyana”.

So said USA based boxer, Elton Dharry yesterday.

Dharry stated that he will look to shake off some ring rust with a tune up fight prior to his potential world title bout here in August.

He told Stabroek Sport that he has his hard hat on in the gym putting in work with hopes of getting back to combat later this month or mid June.

“I am looking forward to the end of May or mid June. It will be a bit difficult to get a fight without a promoter but I am not too worried, I built my own career mostly, so I will figure it out.”

The 35 year old was scheduled to fight in Panama later this month but that bout failed to materialize. He has since parted ways with his promotional company, Havoc Boxing.

While he is self promoted at the moment, he is still on the hunt for a fight prior to the ‘Superhero’ card in three months.

“I am not under a new management team as yet, but I will try my best to get a tune up fight before I come to Guyana because I was advised that the Guyana fight is going to be for a world title and that is major to have a world title fight in Guyana.

So my plan is to get a tune up fight here in the States before coming to Guyana. I don’t want to come rusty because I haven’t fought since my last fight in Australia.”

Following a failed bid to capture the World Boxing Association (WBA) super flyweight title in November, 2019 and an inactive 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dharry, knows that the clock is ticking on his prime.

He said he is re-energized after a lengthy time away from the ring and his mind and body is ready to take on all challenges in 2021.

“I’m working a lot on my strength this time looking for knockouts. I had some injuries over the year but I am healed up now to do my proper strength training to where I can look for the knockouts again.”

Dharry has been training at the Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn and the Blue Line Gym in New Jersey and has armed himself with a new addition to his camp, Coach Scott Burrell.

Dharry (24-6-1, 14KOs) he will be looking for KO number 15 later this month or in June in an effort to propel him to a title shot.
