-

A Venezuelan woman died and four other persons were injured after the car they were travelling in crashed into a utility pole and split in half at Stewartville Public Road, West Coast Demerara, yesterday afternoon.

The dead woman, who was identified as Alejandra Brazon, 20, of Stewartville, died at about 2.30 pm yesterday.

Those injured were identified as the driver of the car, Anthony Ralph, 33, of Buxton, East Coast Demerara, Venezuelan nationals Kataleena, Alexandra (only names given), also of Stewartville, and Urelis Gonsalves, 22, of Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara.

The police, in a report, stated that Ralph was speeding in his car, PRR 2014, along the northern side of the Public Road, when he overtook another car PRR 7512, which was proceeding in the same direction along the northern side of the road.

The report said Ralph lost control of the car after overtaking the other vehicle and he struck a Guyana Power and Light post on the northern parapet. The vehicle was split due to the force of the impact and Brazon’s body landed in a trench nearby.

A video seen by this newspaper showed a speeding car swerving on the roadway before crashing into the utility pole.

Brazon and the others were all unconscious when they were picked up and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital.

Brazon was pronounced dead on arrival, while the others were admitted as patients at the West Demerara Regional Hospital in stable conditions.

The body of the deceased was transported to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour to await a post-mortem examination.
