File on fatal Stabroek Market stabbing for DPP

- Robert Bizzette

A file is being prepared for advice from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) over the fatal stabbing on Tuesday of Robert Bizzette, a vendor at the Stabroek Market.

Bizzette, 35, also known as ‘Brick’, of Cane View, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was stabbed during an altercation over the placement of stalls.

The incident occurred around 4.30 pm at Stabroek Square, Georgetown.

The police stated that Bizzette and the suspect had an argument about the placement of the deceased’s stall during which Bizzette drew a ‘jooker’ (similar to an icepick) and threatened the suspect.

The suspect retaliated by pushing the victim and drawing a knife, the police said.

The argument continued and Bizzette then proceeded to pursue the suspect armed with an axe, while the suspect was armed with the knife.

The suspect then fell to the ground and Bizzette aborted his pursuit. However, as Bizzette was walking away, the suspect stabbed him several times.

A wounded Bizzette then ran to the nearby mobile police outpost where he fell to the ground and was immediately rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

The suspect was later contacted and arrested at Camp and New Market streets by an anti-crime patrol.

Sherry Tixey, the reputed wife of the deceased, said she was informed of his death while leaving the market place where she had gone on a quick errand.

The woman said, according to what she was told, both Bizzette and the accused were armed but Bizzette walked away from the suspect, and it was then that he was attacked from behind.

Tixey noted that the Bizzette worked in the market for over ten years and they shared a relationship for approximately 13 years.

The grieving woman described the father of four as hardworking and a good person. She questioned the lack of humanity shown by onlookers who instead of rendering assistance, chose instead to video record the altercation.
