Basketball federation invited to Americup 3x3 tournament
—Hercules says Guyana unlikely to participate because of a lack of funds
The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) has been invited to send male and female teams to participate at the International Federation of Association (FIBA) Americup 3x3 Championship in Florida.
According to a release from the world governing body, the deadline for confirmation of participation for both the men’s and women’s teams is Thursday.
A registration fee is required before the teams can be ratified, the release added.
“Please be kindly reminded that the registration of your 3x3 national team(s) for the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup is only complete once the payment of the registration fee has been settled. The due date for this payment is 15 July 2021,” the release stated.
Teams whose registration fees have not been paid by Thursday will be removed from the competition, the release added.
The final number of teams and the qualification format will be communicated to the fully-registered teams as soon as the registration is completed,.
National head-coach Junior Hercules and GABF 3x3 Coordinator said that he is uncertain if the GABF will participate in the event.
“It has not been discussed but talked about casually. However it’s an opportunity to participate which adds to your ranking. Everyone knows about it, this is a
known thing. From my end, participation in any 3x3 international tournament would definitely aid in boosting Guyana’s world ranking,” said Hercules.
“There was adequate notice and they have sent reminders to us every week. I would say that it would have been a great opportunity for Guyana to participate in an open 3x3 tournament which would have seen us participating against teams from the USA and other parts of the globe. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem likely that we will be participating due to the limited resources of the federation.”
