Miz Elle champions women in ‘Cold World’
Singer/songwriter Aiyodelle Gilbert who goes by the stage name Miz Elle has recently released a new song dubbed “Cold World” which is an affirmation for women in domestic violence relationships that one day they will find the will to leave and succeed.
“Cold World”, the singer said, is inspired by personal events and those of people close to her who have encountered such situations. The Reggae single was recorded on the Dancehall Cold World Rhythm.
Elle wears a number of hats. She is also a cook, phlebotomist, graphic artist and entrepreneur but music is virtually part of her DNA. Her mother was the late ‘Special Lady Neema’, said to be the country’s first one-woman band and her father is ‘General Gilbert’, who holds the distinction of being the first one-man band in Guyana, Elle told The Scene. Speaking of her father, the singer said he has been in the music industry for more than 30 years and can play several instruments.
Elle first took to the stage as early as four years old at the National Cultural Centre and accompanied her mother to her shows as a girl growing up. She represented her schools in a number of Calypso competitions and later finished as a semi-finalist in the GT&T Jingle and Song Competition (2011). Prior to that, she was a backup performer for X2 (Adrian Dutchin and Jumo Primo) and Malo, among others.
Elle sang with her brother ‘Babyspoon’ in his one-man band, then went on to participate in several other competitions. Following her move to Trinidad, where she lived for a while, she focused on the Soca genre and released “Gimme de Wine” on the Kickstand Riddim, followed by “Mischief”, “One”, and her hit song “Tingolay”. “Cold World” is her fifth single. Before that she released “One” (Unity) inspired by events surrounding last
year’s general elections and the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, where she called for everyone to live in love and unity instead of being segregated.
“Music is very influential and plays a powerful part in how we feel, in love, in how we react to situations, in every situation in life… There’s a song about almost everything. For me to be able to write about situations like these and to make an impact on others is a major accomplishment. I hope [my song] reaches the people who are in need of encouragement and motivation to get up and get out of such situations,” Miz Elle said of “Cold World”.
“I hope that I can be a voice and an ambassador for women across Guyana, the Caribbean and someday, the world at large,” posited the Buxtonian singer who now resides on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway.
Currently another empowerment song called “Woman” is in the pipelines and is slated to be released by the end of the year.
“Cold World” was recorded at Versatile Records/Rhythm Kingdom owned by Miz Elle and her husband. The recording studio is situated at their Kuru Kururu home.
“Cold World” is currently on the YouTube channel GTyouthsVEVO and is expected to be released on other musical platforms soon. Miz Elle is gearing up to perform live at the Ninja Visual Arts and DNA Wakanda, Legacy Vybz Concert on October 3. She will perform “Cold World” and “One” at the virtual concert which will be streamed live on the Ninja Visual Arts Facebook page at 7 pm.
