Meadow Bank man charged with $900,000 armed robbery

-

A man was denied bail on Wednesday after he was charged with using a gun to steal $900,000 from a fish vendor.

Tito Prescott, 25, of Lot 8 Second Street, Meadow Bank, Georgetown, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. He denied that on November 20, at the Meadow Bank wharf, while armed with a gun, he robbed Gildat Ramoutar, of $900,000 cash, property of Ramoutar.

Attorney-at-law Ronald Daniels who appeared virtually, made a bail application on his behalf. According to Daniels, Prescott is adamant that he did not commit the crime. He said that Prescott was at home at the time the crime was committed. He further told the court that his client’s witness was denied the chance to make a statement to the police. He also said that the man is the bread winner of his home and a father of two. He said that Prescott will subscribe to any conditions applied if bail is granted.

The police prosecutor told the court that the virtual complainant and Prescott knew each other because they both worked at the wharf. She said that at about 6 am, while Ramoutar was selling fish in his truck at the wharf, his friend told him that he overheard a conversation between

Prescott and another man. Moments later the men - Prescott and his accomplice approached Ramoutar and Prescott’s accomplice pointed a handgun at the man. Prescott then took the money from the left side pocket, of the front of the man’s pants. Ramoutar reported the incident to the Ruimveldt Police Station and Prescott was arrested three days later.

The prosecutor also said that the accused had been charged before. In October, Prescott had to pay compensation of $75,000 for a damage to property offence. She therefore objected to bail based on the prevalence and serious nature of the offence. She added that there was

video footage of the robbery.

Prescott was denied bail and the matter adjourned until December 1.
