Bonner says players need to come up with “smart tactics” for SL

-

Middle order batsman, Nkrumah Bonner believes that West Indies will need to come up with smarter tactics if they are to draw the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

During a press conference yesterday, Bonner explained that they needed to find ways of countering the Sri Lankan spinners who helped hand them a 187-run loss.

“Moving forward we have to come up with smart tactics in order to play whatever we are playing with the off-spinner or left-arm spinner,” he said.

The Jamaican added, “I think it is something that we are aware of and is something we are working on; I think everyone is working hard to accomplish that however it hasn’t happened as yet but it is something we are working on.”

When asked about the preparation in light of the team’s preempting of a spin heavy Sri Lanka in suitable conditions, Bonner said, “We know that spin is a threat in the subcontinent, obviously the ball is spinning a lot, we have to be more precise in our footwork, whether we are going to come forward or go back so it’s just small things we need to work on to be sure in our defense and also when attacking.”

He added, “I think everyone has the ability to play spin, obviously the Sri Lankan spinners got the better of us in this Test match and obviously everyone would have seen what they have to offer and we are trying to work on that as much as possible in training and give a better showing in the next Test match.”

Bonner explained that it is difficult to get going when the conditions were saw the ball gripping and turning in the first innings before sliding and spinning in the second innings.

“I think the preparation was good leading into the Test match we had a lot of practice to simulate batting against spin, we have good spinners as well, we have good off-spinners and good left-arm spinners as well and the momentum was with Sri Lanka for sure…,” he said.
