Learmond too represented three countries in regional first-class cricket

In the last Edition, Stabroek Sports featured two Stalwarts Lionel Birkett and Shane Julian, both of whom played for three countries in regional first-class cricket. Today we will look at George Cyril Learmond, who also represented three countries at the regional first-class level. George Cyril Learmond was born on the 4th July 1875 in Georgetown, British Guiana. He died on the 2nd March 1918 in St. Vincent. Learmond, the grandfather of Stephen Camacho and father of Angus Learmond and father-in-law of George Camacho, Stephen’s father, made his regional first-class debut for Barbados against British Guiana at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda, in September 1895 scoring 59 & 1. The following year, 1896, he played for his native British Guiana against Jamaica at GCC Bourda in two matches. He also played for British Guiana against Barbados in 1897 and 1900.

In 1901 Learmond played for his third country Trinidad and Tobago, against British Guiana at GCC Bourda. He scored his only regional first-class century as Captain of Trinidad against Jamaica, 120 runs at Sabina Park, Jamaica in August 1905. His last match for Trinidad was in September 1910 at GCC Bourda against Barbados. Learmond toured with West Indies teams before they gained test status, to England in 1900 and 1906. His son, Angus Learmond, his son-in-law George Camacho and his grandson Stephen Camacho all played for British Guiana. Stephen went on to represent the West Indies.
