To test for the new Covid-19 variant at an ‘appropriate time’ is rather perplexing

It is perplexing the statement that the authorities will test for the new Covid-19 variant at ‘appropriate time’ (INews Dec 8), even though the Delta strain is here. What exactly does this mean? Deaths for

Covid-19 are over one thousand. Would we now have to keep separate records for casualties and fatalities for both the Delta and Omicron variants?
