Griffith finishes leading run-scorer in US Open T20

National opening batsman Trevon Griffith capped an impressive stint in the US Open T20 2021, finishing as the tournament’s leading run-scorer.

After five innings, Griffith, who turned out for runnerups, US All-Stars, chalked up 233 runs including two half-centuries at an average of 77.67.

His opening partner and West Indies veteran, Lendl Simmons, smashed the only triple-figure score of the competitio­n and ended with 217 runs while Griffith’s countryman, Chandrapau­l Hemraj, finished with a tally of 207 runs including a best of 75.

In the final, Cavaliers 22 Yards defeated All-Stars by 11 runs. All-Stars won the toss and inserted Cavaliers who romped to 150 for seven in their allotted overs at Central Broward Stadium. All-Stars could only manage 139 for seven by the time their overs expired.

Steven Taylor smashed 47 from 37 balls, including two sixes and four fours while adding 53 for the opening partnershi­p with Hemraj who made 20 from 13 balls. Hammad Azam was the only other batsman to make a significan­t score with 23 while extras accounted for 14 runs.

Griffith was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2-25 while Jon Ross Jaggesar also grabbed 2-33.

Griffith returned to give All-Stars a glimmer of hope, hammering seven boundaries including one six as he raced to 57 from 45 balls.

The left-hander added 46 for the first wicket before losing Simmons for 18. Denesh Ramdin was left stranded on 29 not out as Syed Najafshah led the bowling with 2-25.

Notable West Indian batting performanc­es in the tournament came from Chadwick Walton (150 runs), Sunil Narine (144 runs), Rahkeem Cornwall (128 runs) and Mark Deyal (120 runs).

With the ball, Trinidadia­n spinner, Jaggesar led the wickets column with 13 wickets including a best of three wickets for nine runs. Fidel Edwards and Imran Khan captured seven wickets each while Ashley Nurse (six wickets) and Kharry Pierre (five wickets) got among the wickets.
