Following the passing of former national player George Greene, local football stalwarts, Earl O’Neil and Gordon “Ultimate Warrior’ Brathwaite, have announced that two memorial matches will be staged in his honour.

Former national player Brathwaite informed that two matches will be hosted on Sunday December 19 at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Training Centre. An over-40 fixture will be staged at 15:00hrs while an over-55 encounter will take centre stage at 16:00hrs.

Brathwaite in a brief comment stated that Greene was an immaculate player which translated to his coaching career.

“He was a very good teacher and a very good coach, a real gentleman of the game.

A day of recollection will be held tomorrow (Friday) at the Central Baptiste Church in Brickdam and a wake will occur on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.”

Greene, who passed away on December 4 at the age of 83, represented then British Guiana between 1958 and 1966. During the aforementioned period, Greene represented the West Indies Football Team during a 1959 tour of England.

He also held the portfolio of national coach until 1980, following the end of his playing career. Greene also coached Caribbean teams against Hull City of England and Guangdong Province of China.
