Vendor remanded over $5M ganja find
A vendor was yesterday remanded after being charged with having over $5 million in cannabis in his home.
Joseph October, 51, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
October, who was represented by attorney-at-law Damien DaSilva, pleaded not guilty to the charge that on December 14, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he had 6.078 kilogrammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the case against October, ranks acting on information went to Lot 122 West Ruimveldt and conducted a search of the man’s home. There was another man along with October present at the time.
The police found a white bucket in the kitchen containing several transparent plastic-wrapped parcels with the suspected narcotic. A further check revealed a bulky black plastic bag that contained several small green transparent zip-lock parcels containing leaves, seeds, and stems, suspected to be cannabis. The quantum found had an estimated street value of $5,470,200.
The two men were arrested, however, the other man was released due to insufficient evidence to charge him.
October was remanded to prison until January 21, when another hearing is set.
