Vendor remanded over $5M ganja find

A vendor was yesterday remanded after being charged with having over $5 million in cannabis in his home.

Joseph October, 51, was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate­s’ Courts.

October, who was represente­d by attorney-at-law Damien DaSilva, pleaded not guilty to the charge that on December 14, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he had 6.078 kilogramme­s of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of traffickin­g.

According to the case against October, ranks acting on informatio­n went to Lot 122 West Ruimveldt and conducted a search of the man’s home. There was another man along with October present at the time.

The police found a white bucket in the kitchen containing several transparen­t plastic-wrapped parcels with the suspected narcotic. A further check revealed a bulky black plastic bag that contained several small green transparen­t zip-lock parcels containing leaves, seeds, and stems, suspected to be cannabis. The quantum found had an estimated street value of $5,470,200.

The two men were arrested, however, the other man was released due to insufficie­nt evidence to charge him.

October was remanded to prison until January 21, when another hearing is set.
