A Blairmont, West Bank Berbice pensioner is now traumatized after she was attacked and robbed by two men armed with knives on Sunday.

Savitri Umrao, 74, a pensioner of Lot 97 Number 3 Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, was robbed of her jewellery just around 7. 30 pm while one of her neighbours was present in the home.

According to information gathered, the pensioner was in the lower flat of her house with one of her neighbours, Rakesh, when the two perpetrators invaded her home through the front door which was open at the time.

They were reportedly dressed in dark-coloured hoodies and masks on their faces.

One of the perpetrators immediately grabbed the woman’s neck and placed a knife at her throat after which he threw her on the floor and demanded that she hand over cash.

However, after the woman told the attacker that she did not have any cash he then ripped off her earrings, severing her earlobe.

Stabroek News was told, that he then proceeded to climb on top of her chest and demanded the whereabouts of her grandson, Mohammad Lakhraj also known as “David”, 23, a Bee- Keeper, of Lot 130 Zorg-En-Hoop, Blairmont.

Throughout the robbery, the second robber held Rakesh on the ground.

After the men collected more jewellery they fled.

The woman was robbed of four gold rings valued $125,000, one pair of gold earrings valued $25,000, and one pair gold bangles valued $87, 500.

Umrao was eventually taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.

The woman’s daughter, Rehanna Umrao, said that her mother is still in pain from the robbery which has now left her fearful for her life. The family is unsure as to why the men would have wanted to know the grandson’s whereabouts.

According to the daughter, immediately after the

robbery the victim phoned her causing her to immediately phone the Blairmont Police Station but there was no answer. Yesterday she said that they were eventually told that the phone at the station is “out of order.”

After she was unable to get on to the police via the telephone, she then decided to head over to her mother’s residence and took her to the station where they were then given a document to visit

the hospital for a medical to be done.

The woman said her mother was just given pain medication, as she claimed, that the severed earlobe was not cleaned or dressed nor did they make any effort to examine her mother’s chest.

After the hospital, the women returned to the station where the pensioner’s statement was eventually taken after which the police visited the home.
