Six Berbicians hurt after drunk driver slams into concrete structure

Six Berbicians are now nursing injuries after the driver of the vehicle they were in slammed into a concrete structure on Main Road early yesterday morning.

Kirk Munroe, 21, was driving PXX 3973 while Kevin Munroe, 19, was in the front passenger seat. Both are of Lot 137 Vryman’s Erven Housing Scheme, New Amsterdam (MA). Also in the vehicle were Dexter Welcome, 21, of Lot 219 M&TC Housing Scheme, NA; Shemroy Hoyte, 20, of Lot 86 Amsville Housing Scheme, NA; Cranston Rafael Fraser, 20, of Sisters Village, East Bank Berbice; Rayon Rose, 20, of Sheet Anchor, East Canje Berbice and Nicholas Amsterdam, 20, of 45 Stanleytow­n, NA. Reports said that Kirk Munroe lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a concrete structure along Main Road, New Amsterdam minutes after midnight.

According to the Guyana Police Force, Kirk Munroe was proceeding south along the eastern drive lane of Princess Elizabeth Public Road, New Amsterdam. When he approached the intersecti­on between Vryheid and Main Road, he “lost control of the vehicle which swerved west and collided into a concrete base structure which is situated on the western side of Main Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice”, the police said.

As a result of the crash, the driver and occupants were rushed to New Amsterdam Public Hospital by public-spirited persons.

Fraser, who was initially admitted for laceration­s to his forehead, has since been transferre­d to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The driver and the other occupants were admitted for observatio­n since they suffered minor cuts and bruises on their bodies. As of yesterday, Hoyte and Rose had been discharged.

Meanwhile, the GPF’s statement yesterday added that breathalyz­er tests were conducted on the driver and “same gave readings of .85 and .56 micrograms of alcohol. The prescribed limit is .35 micrograms and below.”

An investigat­ion is ongoing into the accident.
