Packed 2022 expected for GASA

The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) will be diving into a busy 2022 with developments aplenty.

In an exclusive interview with this publication, President of GASA, Dwayne Scott outlined his vision for the sport this year while acknowledging it will be tough.

“It will be a challenging year of course, but I am confident that with the efforts we would have put in that we would continue to overcome and continue to grow the sport,” he stated.

Scott, who reflected on 2021 as a year of record-breaking performances highlighted that similar to how females had come to the fore of the sport last year, this year will see a more keen application to keep youths active and engaged.

For the upcoming year, some of the major tournaments Guyana is expected to be part of was revealed by Scott who mentioned that financing and pool time were some of the challenges of 2021.

“We should see a nicely sized contingent to the CARIFTA games, we have the junior South American games coming up sometime around April, the Bolivarian games sometime in July and the senior South American games happening sometime in October of next year.”

Additionally, Scott noted, “We have been in discussion with the Government and the Guyana Olympic Association for our participation in the sports academy and we continue to work with local and regional stakeholders

From an administrative level, the GASA head outlined that there are conversations taking place to put structures in place to improve its governance.

He explained that the body is pushing hard to have a code of conduct and constitutional reform in place by the end of January as well as a disciplinary committee established to deal with conduct.

“We also want to put in place, a body to monitor and spearhead the way our athletes are treated and handled,” he added.
