-

A successful bid to host the highest regional event in 2024, its athletes returning with hardware from international outings, and successfully hosting its statutory competitions albeit amid the pandemic, were the highlights of bodybuilding for the year 2021.

The body is now looking to hit the ground running in 2022 with the Novices/Mr Linden event tentatively set for mid-March.

According to President of the Guyana Bodybuilding Fitness Federation, Keavon Bess, plans are also in the pipeline to further decentralise the sport with the hosting of the Intermediate and the Mr Berbice Classic in June.

Bess, an attorney-at-law, highlighted that Guyana has increased its tally of Central America and Caribbean (CAC) qualified judges from one to four, namely,

Frank Tucker (CAC and IFBB certified), Aubrey Henry, Franklyn Brisport-Luke and Bess.

After earning four medals at CAC 2021 in El Salvador and the Santo Domingo Open in the Dominican Republic, compliments of Emmerson Campbell, Rosanna Fung, Darious Ramsammy and Nicholas Albert, Bess said the federation will soon commence preparation for CAC 2022 in Barbados in July, the highest regional event.

Guyana secured the rights to host the spectacle in two years at the Congress in El Salvador last August.

Bess informed, “The federation and the team of athletes selected to represent

Guyana at CAC in Barbados from the 27th of July to August 1 will commence work in securing sponsorship to have the best showing for that show.”

He added “After that, we will proceed to prepare for Seniors 2022. Other items on the calendar for 2022 include fund raising activities and several planned seminars for the athletes which include posing and health and nutrition seminars.”

In conclusion, Bess thanked the Guyana Olympic Association, the Ministry of Sport, Fitness Express, and DTS Trading and Shipping, and his executive members for making the year 2021 a successful one.
